Help us get the word out!

While we have a fantastic line-up of speakers, workshops, and vendors lined up for 2022, what really makes Doxacon Seattle special is the unique mix of people who attend: Christians from all backgrounds and traditions, from Eastern Orthodox to Evangelical; old-school geeks and trending pop culture fans; readers, gamers, cosplayers, collectors; and people who transcend genres and defy definition!

In other words: YOU make Doxacon Seattle what it is.

Doxacon Seattle is a place where we can find our people, rest easy in our shared weirdness, and find appreciation for our unique worldviews. But the Pacific Northwest has lots of faithful geeks who still haven’t heard of us!

If you’d like to help others discover Doxacon Seattle, please spread the word at your favorite coffee shops or game stores, and at your churches. We’ve put together an easy, printable flyer that you can download and share with anyone you think would be interested.  Or you can just hang it on your wall, to appreciate the awesome artwork by our friend, Reece Friesen!

Happy Thanksgiving!

The planning team at Doxacon Seattle wishes you a happy Thanksgiving, and hopes that you have much to be thankful for. We certainly find ourselves grateful for many things.

First off, we’re grateful that we have a convention to look forward to! The past couple years have been especially hard on events like Doxacon Seattle, and we’re excited to be meeting in person this coming February 12. We’re especially glad we’ll be able to live-stream the convention for those who cannot join us in person. We should have tickets going on sale soon, so watch this space!

Next, we’re thankful for our keynote speaker, Fr. Jacob Maurer, and for the other speakers and workshops we have lined up for 2022. Already, we have talks ranging from duty in epic literature to questions of medical ethics, as well as writing and gaming workshops. There’s still room for a few more presenters, if you find yourself with something to say or explore about our theme of “Is This the Way? Duty and Morality”. Check out our presenter’s guidelines if you’re interested.

We’re also excited to welcome back some of our favorite artists and merchants to our vendors’ area! Thanks especially to Erika Rae Heins, who has recently stepped up to help with planning, and to Reece Friesen, who has designed our fantastic artwork for this year’s convention! If you’re an artist, craftsperson, or merchant interested in joining them in the Doxacon Seattle market square, please drop us a line!

Finally, we’re grateful for all your support for Doxacon Seattle over the past many years and especially throughout this time of pandemic. Your prayers, your hours of volunteering, and of course your financial support help keep us going. To that end, we want to note that we’re still welcoming volunteers for 2022. In addition, you can get Doxacon Seattle swag on our new storefront on Spring, and that you can support us directly on Patreon.

Keynote Speaker: welcome, Fr. Jacob Maurer!

Fr. Jacob MaurerWe’re excited to welcome Fr. Jacob Maurer as our Keynote presenter for Doxacon Seattle 2022!

Fr. Jacob has served the Seattle Archdiocese as a priest since 2009, and has been pastor of St. Mark Catholic Parish in Shoreline, Washington since 2019. An avid reader of science fiction and fantasy, he also enjoys gaming (tabletop and video), hiking trails, archery, and discussing the faith with other Catholics as well as anyone interested.

Welcome to the Doxacon family, Fr. Jacob! We’re looking forward to your presentation!

2022 Artwork by Reece Friesen!

You might have noticed the new banners on our website and Facebook pages. These are based on the new artwork for Doxacon Seattle 2022 done by our good friend Reece Friesen! He was good enough to work with us to put our theme, “Is This the Way? Duty and Morality”, into a visual form. Here is the full image:

You’ll find this image featured on Doxacon Seattle swag, which is available from our webstore on Spring. It’s just in time to get Doxacon gifts for Christmas!

Reece is an author and artist for his own graphic novel series, Pax Avalon, as well as serving as pastor of discipleship and outreach at Eben-Ezer Mennonite Church. He is a frequent presenter at Doxacon Seattle. Thanks, Reece, for your artwork and for your faithfulness!

Call for volunteers!

Doxacon Seattle is an entirely volunteer-run event, and it’s the people who step up that make it a great place for faithful fans to gather, learn, and connect with each other. If you want to help this year, please drop a line to info.doxaconseattle@gmail.com with “Volunteer” in the subject line.

What would you do as a volunteer? It can range from handing out name badges to attendees or helping move some tables between sessions to assisting vendors or guiding speakers to their sessions. But since this year we’re planning a hybrid in-person/online event, we particularly need help in the following areas:

  • Technology:
    • Master Technomage: if you have experience at running a livestream for events, you have a shot at becoming 2022’s Most Valuable Volunteer! (We have found a Master Technomage; but we still need Assistant Technomages!)
    • Assistant Technomage: the Master Technomage can’t do everything on their own; this is a great opportunity to get experience working with audio/video streaming for an event; we’ll be happy to train you, if you have little or no experience
  • Kitchen Assistants: because of COVID restrictions, our food service will look a little different this year, so our Chef will need a few helping hands to make sure meals and snacks are both delicious and safe for all
  • Registration and Hospitality: there’s no better way to get to know the other attendees than by checking them in and helping them navigate the convention

You can volunteer for the whole day, or for just an hour, whatever works for you and allows you to engage most fully with the convention. Again, to join our crew, just drop a line to info.doxaconseattle@gmail.com with “Volunteer” in the subject line.

Call for presenters and workshops!

Now that we’ve confirmed the date and location of Doxacon Seattle 2022 – February 12, 2022, at the Brightwater Center – we’re able to accept proposals for presentations, panels, workshops, and game sessions!

Do you have insights on our theme, “Is this the way? Duty and Morality”, that you’d like to present? Do you have a craft or skill that you’d like to help others participate in? Would you like to be a panelist on some aspect of popular culture and Christian faith?

To join our keynote speakers and core presenters, check out our Application Guidelines and send us your proposal! We’re interested in anyone with an interest in Christian theology and traditions and geek culture, so drop us a line!

At last, we’ve secured our venue!

We’re excited that The Brightwater Center in Woodinville will continue to be the home for Doxacon Seattle this coming year!

This also means we’ve nailed down a date for the convention. Mark your calendars for February 12, 2022!

Now that we’ve got a venue and a date, expect a number of updates to come soon. We’ll be looking for presenters, volunteers, and vendors to add to our core schedule of keynotes, workshops, and activities. Keep your eyes open!

EDIT: It seems like requirements and restrictions keep changing every time we turn around, but as long as we are allowed by the State and the Brightwater Center, we plan to meet in person. We’ll keep you posted of any changes.

Behind-the-scenes news, and convention news!

It’s been a busy summer for Doxacon Seattle, and we finally are able to bring you some updates!

Board elections and Planning Committee

Some of you may know that Doxacon Seattle is sponsored by the Christian Gaming and Unconventional Fiction Outreach, or CG-UFO, a non-profit organization focused on the intersection of faith and popular culture in the Pacific Northwest.  At our summer board meeting, we elected some new officers to the CG-UFO Board, so while some of the names are familiar, you might see a couple new names:

  • President: Tanya Keenan
  • Vice-President: Tim Brown
  • Treasurer: Valerie Spasojevic
  • Secretary: Robert King
  • Morale: Megan Lorance
  • At-large: Rose Achey
  • At-large: Erika Heins

Thanks to all of you for making sure Doxacon Seattle keeps going and growing!

In addition, we confirmed a couple people to the Planning Committe for Doxacon Seattle, particularly Presvytera Elizabeth Tervo as Writing Group Liason and The Reader Gregory as Facilities Liason.

Expecting the unexpected

As for the actual 2022 convention, we’re watching the news and the requirements Washington State has for gatherings, and at this point we hope to have an in-person event in January or February of 2022. Our mission is to build up a community of Christian geeks, so the safety of that community remains a top priority. Our ideal is to gather in-person safely. For that reason, we’re not setting the exact date of Doxacon Seattle 2022 until we have a confirmation from our venue that we’re meeting all the safety requirements.

Meanwhile, we have a theme: “Is This the Way? Duty and Morality”. In the next few weeks we hope to put out a call for presentations, so if you have something to say about the ideas of duty and morality in fiction, games, faith, and/or everyday life, start working on your proposal! Moreover, we’re going to need some volunteers, so if you have gifts to share – especially in the area of livestreaming or hybrid event planning – please let us know! 2021 went pretty well, all things considered, but we’d like to make 2022 an even more engaging and dynamic event!

Speaking of 2021, all our sessions are now live on YouTube, including the collaborative story. Check them out!

These are stressful times still, but also exciting times! We’re looking forward to connecting with you all soon!
