Doxacon Seattle weekly digest (September 8-14)

As summer draws to a close, we here at Doxacon Seattle, we are working hard to prepare for the 2025 Doxacon Seattle. Last week we posted a call for vendors and a call for volunteers. As the saying goes, ‘many hands make light work’ – we would love to have you be part of the work (and fun!) of the coming convention. Check out both posts for more information about how you can help make Doxacon Seattle a success!

September 10 – On this day in 1993, the X-Files television series premiered (1993). Mulder & Scully’s conspiracy believer/skeptic combo took a generation on a ride that many still reminisce about today. So enthusiastic are fans of the show that they themselves interviewed nearly 100 cast members! You can read about it at their website and watch the interviews on their YouTube.

A photograph of the debris of the World Trade Center after the September 11 attacks in 2001. Among the ruins, two steel beams form a cross that would come to be known as the Ground Zero Cross.

September 11 Though over 20 years have passed since the attacks in 2001, this day still stands out in the memories and hearts of many Americans. Across denominations, Christians continue to pray for healing and peace as we commemorate the lives lost and the sacrifices made in the face of terrible danger & suffering. Of the many images that emerged from that day, one that captured many hearts was the cross that was formed by two broken beams found at the site of the World Trade Center. It was eventually installed on a pedestal at ground zero in 2004. History.com has a video on its installation.

September 12 On this day in 1624, King James I took part in the first public submarine test, performed in the Thames River of London. Though the submarine of the time was only submerged 10-15 feet underwater, it was nonetheless an extraordinary achievement. Read about it at the Londonist website

September 14 As we remember September 11 this week, Christians of both the Orthodox and Catholic Churches celebrate today the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. This feast follows the anniversary of the dedication of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem – the site of both the crucifixion and burial of Jesus. Legend holds that Empress Helena discovered three crosses at that site on September 14, 320. The cross of Christ was revealed among them when a woman suffering from disease was touched to it and was healed. Read about this feast day at the Vatican news website.
